Be Kind Cadaver are a post-punk band, if ‘post-punk’ means drawing on contemporary Ugandan rhythms as much as Duster-inspired slow-core, Jesus Lizard era noise rock and experimental modular electronics. Throw in a psyche improv and a big pop chorus, front the whole thing with a mildly angry Scott Walker and you might be close.
A five piece formed of visual artist Leroy (guitars, percussion) and performance artist Distant Animals (vocals, synthesis, percussion), alongside Sara, John and Oliver, the band draw upon a shared love of conceptual art, approaching the music as more an exploration of sound as a social process than a set genre or form. And if all that sounds pretentious, it probably is – their practices steeped in academic terms such as ‘cross medial interrogation’ and ‘critical emergence’, which they can just about get away with as one of them is an actual doctor.
Having previously explored the niche issue of male postpartum on their 2022 EP of the same name, their most release release ‘World’s Greatest Minds’ – released on the Analog Trash label – engages with the notion of cultural and political impotence, framing the complexities of contemporary Britain through the prism of the everyday, the mundane, and the pedestrian.
Having recently expanded from a 2-piece to a 5-piece, the band is working on their debut album with songs exploring a myriad of genres – from punk to electro, to folk to psych, and steadily building their reputation as one of the South-East’s most exciting, most unpredictable live bands. With songs lamenting the inadequacies of National Rail, the fall of Easter Island, and the depressing nature of podcast culture, BKC offer a fierce and poetic deconstruction of the modern world.
